5 Trends for the Restaurant Industry in 2020!

New Year, New Trends. The end of 2019 marks the end of the decade, and as such, 2020 signals the start of not only a new year but also a new decade.

Keeping a restaurant up to date for 2020 is a tremendous challenge, so here are 5 trends to help you start the new decade off on the right foot:

1 – “Locavore”, a term you’ll need to know because it’s going to gain even more traction.

“Locavore” refers to a diet consisting mainly of local ingredients, sourced from local markets or directly from producers. As younger generations increase their purchasing power, the concepts of “fair trade” and transparency are becoming increasingly important in consumer buying habits.

2 – Takeout platforms and the consumer experience

Uber Eats and Glovo have become a new way for restaurants to reach their customers’ homes, which begs the question: Why do we go to restaurants? It’s for the experience! In the coming years, the restaurant industry will embrace the concept of “immersive dining.” It won’t be just about the dishes and flavors, but also about immersing oneself in the unique atmosphere of each restaurant.

3 – Transparency. More and more…

Combining the two previous trends, the “open kitchen” concept has gained popularity in recent years. In 2020, this trend will gain even more momentum. Consumers want their restaurants to be transparent— Why not an open kitchen concept? The customer can watch their dish being prepared, yet without ever intruding on the kitchen staff’s work.

In this sense, kitchen uniforms take on an image that is just as important as the uniforms worn by the front-of-house staff.

4 – Kids’ Menus with “Superfoods.” After all, we can have fun with food.

Eating healthy is no longer just a trend, but a given. However, kids’ menus have been neglected in most restaurants.

The current trend is for kids to explore new flavors, bringing quinoa into the mix, or whole-grain bread, for example.

It’s a way for restaurants to help kids expand their horizons beyond the classic hamburgers and hake fillets, while supporting a culture of healthy eating.

5 – Zero Waste Movement. The era of maximum efficiency is here.

Whether it’s to donate to those in need or to boost composting in your organic garden, reducing waste is a hot topic these days. If you want to run a business that gives back not only to the community but also to the planet, this is undoubtedly a trend worth embracing!
